High Cholesterol

Has anyone else experienced a large increase in their cholesterol and triglycerides since starting dialysis??

My cholesterol has jumped from 180 to 236 (even after starting Lovistatin) and my triglicerides have jumped from 99 to 284!!

My diet has not changed at all, the only difference is dialysis.

Are on daily or nocturnal?

Daily

Hmm, what do you eat Cathy? Hamburgers? french fries? Is fried foods your favorite?..

The only times I’ve seen mine go up is when I eat alot of fatty foods…

Funny Gus!! No as I said my diet hasn’t changed. I did learn something though, that they may not be accurate as I’m not fasting when I draw my blood and cholesterol and triglycerides are affected if not fasting. We are repeating the blood tests next week when I am fasting and I am hopeful that they will be back to their pre-dialysis numbers, although I’m not 100% sure that is the only problem.

The good news is a sick sort of way though, is that the news updates section had a blurb on a research report that said dialysis patients on statin drugs have a lower mortality rate, so maybe having it go up and getting me on statins will end up being good for me in the long run. Hey, got to try to make lemonade whenever you can lol!!

Hehehe, sometimes now and then cholestrol topics may be humorous…

Ex-President Clinton already stopped eating the hamburgers… hehe

Anyway, most of my lab works are done before I eat…my average dialysis treatments I don’t eat right before dialysis or on dialysis and if my stomach has acid then I take tums or eat something small like cookies, crackers , or a piece of bread…

Perhaps fasting will give you more accurate numbers… why do you think Diabetics need to test their glucose 2 hours after eating or before? Same rule applies, results are affected…

I do dialysis from about 7pm to 11pm, and need to start setting up by 6:15 so I either have just eaten dinner or I eat dinner while on the machine. I just have to remember not to eat that day and have dinner on the machine, but sometimes I forget, plus they had never told me to take the blood fasting.

Hi…

The average fasting blood cholesterol level in people living in the UK is 5.8mmol/l (mmol/l is short for millimoles per litre of blood). Don’t worry having too much cholesterol in the blood is not a disease in itself, but can lead to the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis) in the major vascular systems.

I deleted the commercial link from the last post, since the person was unregistered, and there is more neutral, credible info available. If you want to learn more about cholesterol, heart health, etc., you can start with the Kidney School module on Heart Health and Blood Pressure, which is specific to folks with kidney disease: http://www.kidneyschool.org
