NX Stage Questions

I am a predialysis PKD patient and looking down the road at using NXStage machine for home hemo. I have a few questions I hope someone can help me with:

  1. what does the water hookup require to use the Pureflow SL option (ie. can you run a water line to the machine in another room?)
  2. what about a drain connection?
  3. If I just use dialysate, what is the physical size of the cartons that it comes in? (ex. 11" x 11" x 16" ?)
  4. How many bags in a carton and what is their weight?
  5. How many boxes are delivered per month? (Storage space may present a problem)

I am a newbie so any help would be appreciated including pros and cons of NXStage.

THANKS !!!

wmjtow13,
Hi the sack boxes for use with the pureflow are about 12"W X 18"D x 6"H, have 2 saks each.
The boxes of bag dialysate are about 10"W x 15"D by 10"H, have 2 bags to a box. Each bag is 5L so think of 5 1-L bottles of soda. Pretty heavy. Not unmanageable.
Boxes the cartridges come in are about 12"W x 25"D by 12"H and 6 cartridges come in a box.
You can run a water line to another room.
Drain connection for bags is a line 25’ long that you can run to the bathroom and put into the toilet.
Drain line to pureflow you can run to a drain line in your bathroom and connect.
The first delivery we got was 88 boxes including the prueflow which came in either 2 or 3 boxes.
Once you are set up. It depends on what your prescription is. We use 60L a night so I use 3 cases of saks a week and I keep a week extra for good measure.
Bags is a different story for us. We use 45L as backup so I usse 9-5L bags for one treatment. That is 4 1/2 cases per night. I keep 3 days supply on hand for backup.
This is not the typical for the majority of people most people us 20L a night on up but not as much as we use.
We love the pureflow. My husband hasn’t felt this good in a while. We do Nxstage Nocturnal. We did Nocturnal home befroe this with a Freseius Machine.
Good Luck
Please check out the message boards on Yahoo also. There is a dialysis one and a Nxstage one.

First of all THANK YOU for the reply. As a result I have a few more questions.

  1. What is NXStage Nocturnal ? I thought the NXStage System One machine was used during the day for about a 2 1/2 hour treatment per day ?
  2. Howmany treatments do you get per Pureflow sak (assuming 20L per treatment, which you indicated is more the norm) ( Wow! I thought the amount of fluid used per treatment was MUCH less)
3)Howmany treatments per cartridge (again presuming 20L per treatment)
4)From your info., I calculated I would need 60 cases per month of dialysate (assuming 20L per treatment) plus additional cases for the cartridges. That seems like a huge amount of storage space needed for a months supply. Am I missing something.
    Thanks again for responding.

Wm, in addition to Pat’s great answer (thanks Pat for measuring the boxes before me), the PureFlow water are 40 ft long, and NxStage provides three different hookups; undersink (requiring a little bit of plumbing work to connect, something any handy homeowner can probably do), faucet attachment, and washing machine type. My is under the sink and goes through one wall from bathroom to tx room.

Additional questions:

  1. Nocturnal is an additional modality where the tx usually lasts about 8 hrs and the BFR is much lower, thus being easier on the heart. Longer tx is usually more beneficial…
  2. Three 20L tx per SAK
  3. One tx per cartridge no matter amount of dialysate. Cartridge is a disposable; put it in
  • take it out. It’s one of the beauties of NxStage — makes each setup and teardown a breeze.
  1. Assuming six tx per week, you’ll need 12 dialysate boxes, one cartridge box. SO a month’s worth would be 60 D, 5 C and two wasteline (24 ea). Also, you need to add an extra one week’s supply as a buffer. Plus don’t forget other supplies; saline (12 per box, one per tx usually), bh needles, syringes(usually 2cc,10cc and a few 20cc), tape, gauze, chux, etc. NxStage was very cooperative and I got a shipment every other week rather than once every four — still my house looked like a warehous. With PF, it’s down to a minimum.
