Trysolol

Are anyone familiar with a drug thinning drug that was used during heart surgery that might lead to Kidney failure. The drug is by Bayer, trysolol and was just pulled off the market yesterday.

Unregistered, a bit of Google searching suggests that the drug you’re talking about is called Trasylol (aprotinin). Here’s a link to the Bayer site that talks about how to use the drug in the OR: http://www.trasylol.com/, and it links to information about the temporary suspension of marketing (not a recall).

The purpose of the drug is to reduce inflammation–it’s not really technically a blood thinner. For anyone who gets into this stuff, here’s a pdf about the drug’s pharmacology: http://www.univgraph.com/bayer/inserts/trasylol.pdf. And, here’s a link to the most current FDA info: http://www.fda.gov/CDER/DRUG/infopage/aprotinin/default.htm.
