Cannulartion problems-newish fistula

Hi,
very new to HHD. Fistula (upper arm) was placed December 2, 2021. No dialysis until Jan 28th after a heart attack and hospitalization. Anyway, we did HHD training from mid-February to this past week. Buttonhole problems from the start, especially venus. Hard to obtain flashback, lots of pain, some swelling, bruising, high pressures and burning/stinging like feeling at the outer edges of the fistula (the wall I guess). The nurse always has to dig around to get optimal placement and sometimes we get high pressure alarms (mostly on the venus). But many times, treatment went with ok with some alarms. Only once did we have to stop treatment with maybe an hour to go due to super high pressure in venus. But, cannulating problems persist. Twice within the last 7 days the nurse had to abandon the venus buttonhole and use sharp to cannulate above the buttonhole. The pain was horrid. I skipped 1 treatment to give my arm a rest, ice it up and squeeze the ball for exercise. Tried again today, could not get flashback from the arterial, which has not ever happened. I was so disheartened, and scared of continued pain, I cancelled today’s treatment.
I’m going to the center tmrw. But, just wondering if all this is normal for a 3 month old fistula, and is it supposed to hurt this much?? I nearly passed out when the nurse used a sharp to cannulate me on Friday. Is there a less painful way?
thanks in advance-Lawrence
