Dialysis machine measurements

Hi Dr. Agar,

I haven’t been around for awhile, but I hope you might remember me (or maybe not!). Anyway I’m the fellow who had a daughter on dialysis years ago (transplant still doing fine).

One thing that that has kept me busy has been going back to school for networking IT. To make a long story I have some technical people interested in possibly pursing programming up a Virtual Kidney Dialysis Machine (it actually would only exist on a PC). We believe this could be used for training purposes.

We would like to simulate various models of machines eventually, but I was thinking we ought to start with an imaginary machine that put out all the various measurements you and your colleagues would like to see. I remember you put out some excellent guidelines for a treatment sometime back, so I thought I would approach you with the idea.

Regards,
plugger

Dear Plugger

Thanks for thinking of me as a contributor to this project but I have a number of irons in the new technology fire at the moment and I need to be careful that I don’t stray from confidentialities with other projects or confuse the picture too much with too many cross-purpose commitments. As such, I think I had better defer on this one.

I would make one comment, though, and it is this:

… as so many different machines are now either in development or are in actual usage, and as they now use (or promise to use) a smorgasbord of different platforms and concepts, it might prove hard to get a virtual model that does justice to each platform.

Good luck … and it will be interesting to see what might emerge … but for now, I am already committed beyond sensible boundaries and one more is going to have to be one more, too many.

I understand, but if you happen to run across anybody who might have an interest in this let me know!

I’ve been thinking more about a starting point for all this. And I’ll share with you my thoughts on this: I think I ought to get your book! I might not be able to decipher a lot of it, but I’ll bet I can find a lot of people who can! Maybe even my kid, he is a doctor working in internal medicine (his Mom and I have pushed him to become a cardiologist/nephrologist, but dr. slacker has been reluctant).

Another book I’m also thinking of getting would be: Expert Tips on Becoming a Dialysis Technician

Seems to me seeing this from a dialysis technician’s point of view would be a good start!

Yeah, I also think i casesam.co.uk should get the book. That ourcase.co.uk must be helpful.
