Funny taste in mouth with NxStage

For those on NxStage do you get a funny taste in your mouth when the tx initiates?

Surprised no one has encountered this. A home patient told us about it and said it occurs at put on. Some describe it as metallic taste or plastic.

Some people are so sensitive that they can taste everything, particularly the new patients…myself I can taste the heparin, saline, plastics and so on…this is nothing new but also persisted in-center…however, after so many years on dialysis you just seem to get use to it…

it goes away after while , for me it took longer than the nxstage nurse expected. I worked with someone from nxstage.

Gus, heard it is a really strong bad taste specifically with the NxStage. We are wondering what causes it?

How long does it take to go away?

That’s weird… :? …never heard that one before…perhaps overstatement or exageration?

The only thing I recall during training time is a cool refreshing taste… 8)

I’ve never noticed any taste with either the NxStage or Fresenius.

My significant other also experienced the bad taste when treatment was started. We tried dumping the prime and that seemed to help a bit.

Good luck

The only thing I can “taste” is when I administer Venofer. On Fresenius though, not NxStage.

In the very first years of my dialysis…in-center I was able to taste every aspect of dialysis therapy, from saline, plastic tubing, and the injectavle medicines…after 20 years doing dialysis I can still taste it but not the same as when I started in the early years…literally its less now…

Currently, the strongest taste comes from I.V. iron which I don’t do anymore…

Is this on the NxStage? It seems something thqat gives off such a bad taste would be better dumped out.

Can someone refresh our memory on all the reasons it is better to dump the prime at the start of a tx? Previously knew this info. but have since forgotten all of the reasons. Think it is to flush the packaging contaminants out of the lines and loose fibers out of the dialyzer. Also, to not add fluid to the tx, because the point is to remove fluid- not add to the goal. There were posts at dialysis_support yrs ago about micro-organisms in the saline I think. Question is, is it still advisable to dump the prime when using a machine with ultra pure dialysate?
