Have you lost your fistula?

How did it happen? what would you do differently?

Yes, -
I lost mine - an upper arm (left) fistula. I was doing HHD on a Fresenius 4008B, using ‘buttonholing’. I initially had a bleed from the arterial b/h, then got a massive infection & went into hospital (e.o.Oct. '06). THey tried to save it & were going to do a patch with vein from elsewhere. But too much necrotic tissue in there, so they ‘throttled’ it off.
What happened after? -
Been a real adventure since then - permacath for 7 months in r/h chest. Two failed attempts at new fistulas on right wrist area. Successful, but too deep, fistula on upper right arm (I have to go in to have it superficialised in Sept.), which they had a scan done on 2 weeks after…& found clotting in the sub-clavical area around the permacath. So into hospital again; permacath out, new one in on left chest; warfarinised; let out 9 days later; back in by ambulance 6 days later - another big infection in the new permacath!!!
Femoral cath for days lying flat on my back, not allowed to move my leg !!
And now I have the relatively unusual Trans-lumbar Permacath (put in under G.A., not local like the usual ones)…so it’s been almost 10months since HHD now

Bear
I know you are going in for another go at the upper arm fistula soon and I am sure I speak for everyone here in hoping that this time it works like a dream!

Don’t let the wife take your former Home dialysis room back matey, you will be back using it before too long!

Cheers

well no, I won’t. Not yet. There is the possibility of in-center nocturnal…but we’ll
believe that when it happens

Great news!

Bear received a transplant on 14th Feb in Brisbane and is doing very well, although he reckons he feels as weak as a kitten! Organ donation rates are pathetic in Australia so to get a transplant is a very precious and rare thing.

Hopefully here’s to the end of busted fistulas and dialysing in hospital ,Bear!!! Stay well and look after yourself.

Look after that new kidney, mate.

Cheers

Hi Folks
Hi Rickysyfee

Can you tell me , loss fistula and how you mean it?

I had my clot that shut me down and the pain was hell, but they save it. But in the process have lost some feelings in my left hand( upper left arm fistula) and three fingers always tingle.
thanks
bob obrien

Hi Bob,
Ralph just had to have his upper left arm good fistula tied off. He was not getting any blood flow in his left had. He had 2 sores that would not heal.
When they tied it off on Thursday 2/21/08 the hand started to pink right up. He was using an oven mitt and a heating pad to help the pain. Now the hand is warm to touch and the 2 sores really look good.
They put a new fistula in his right hand at wrist and they sure is purrrrring! We will be using a catheter until that new fistula matures.
Bob watch that hand and your finger nail beds. If they start to look blue/gray talk to you drs right away.
You do not want to loose your fingers for hand!
