Rash on abdomen

Hi,
My husband has a rash on his abdomen - it is very itchy. His blood readings are not too bad, his phosphate is a little high (about 2.5) he takes 2 sevelamer - 800 mg, with each meal and we are also very conscious of his phosphate intake in the foods he eats.
He has told the renal outreach nurse but she has no suggestion what to put on this rash.
We have tried paw paw cream, this does not help. Does anyone have this problem and if so what do you use to help the itch?
Thank you

Hi Elaine,

A rash is one of those symptoms that can have any number of causes–that may or may not be related to your husband’s PD. There is really no way to tell without having a doctor (preferably a dermatologist, or skin doctor) seeing it.

The location of the rash can be a clue. It’s on his abdomen. What comes in contact with his abdomen? Clothing: have you changed detergents lately? Does he use tape to hold his PD catheter in place? MANY people are allergic to tape; if this is the problem, a PD belt (see some examples in our Helpful Products Catalog, here: http://www.homedialysis.org/hpc/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1&zenid=4f4d69n4bu5q2et407h6bv6aa5.

Drugs can cause allergies with a rash, too. Has he started any new ones since the rash appeared? Or switched his brand of soap?
